“As a therapist, I bring my education, life experience and clinical training to help guide our work. I combine these powerful tools with a willingness to suspend judgment, think creatively, and remain truly engaged to develop new perspectives and skills that move you toward creating the life you want.

— Tom Kessler, MFT

I work with adults, couples, teens and families, who are suffering from depression, anxiety trauma and relationship struggles. Many have also been impacted by the negative consequences of drug, and alcohol abuse or behavioral addictions. I tailor my therapeutic approach to each individual or couple based on their particular style, temperament and issues presented.

I have found that specific theories tend to be limiting. One size does not fit all and my knowledge and practice is based on components of a variety of theoretical orientations

As a therapist, I bring my education, life experience and clinical training to help guide our work. I combine these powerful tools with a willingness to suspend judgment, think creatively, and remain truly engaged as we work toward helping you to develop new perspectives and skills that move you toward creating the life you want.

My Therapy Pup, Ava

There are some clients that come to sessions with my therapy dog in the room. A therapy dog can have a positive therapeutic effect and has been proven to reduce symptoms of depression, anxiety and trauma. Because Ava is highly intuitive and withholds judgment while showing unconditional love, she provides additional social and emotional support for many of my clients. This is especially true with my younger teenage clients. There are times when a teen is having trouble expressing their feelings and I will suggest that they talk to Ava. Her presence in the room reduces their anxiety, putting them at ease, thus creating a feeling of safety and comfort so they can explore and discuss their feelings openly and honestly.

My work with couples draws upon my experience utilizing evidence- based practices developed by John Gottman, Gary Chapman, Dan Wiles And Sue Johnson. Each session is concluded with home assignments and exercises to practice together in between sessions. The “homework” assignments are instrumental in helping to develop, and build new relationship skills. These new skills will not only help you in your intimate relationship but relationships in other areas of your life.
